¿Cómo configurar xorg.conf para VNC de pantalla ancha en Linux / Ubuntu sin cabeza?

Tengo un Ubuntu 12.10 Box configurado para funcionar sin cabeza. He logrado arrancar X sin cabeza mediante una gran cantidad de bashs de testing y error, pero todavía tengo un problema técnico:

Al arrancar usando el monitor, todo funciona bien, la resolución de pantalla ancha y todo, al arrancar sin cabeza se mantendrá con resoluciones 4: 3, sospecho que tiene algo que ver con el controller vesa.

Especificaciones:

  • tarjeta de video intel HD 4000 (i7 integrado)
  • ubuntu 12.10 (últimas actualizaciones)

Lo hago con bastante frecuencia en cajas que casi nunca tienen monitores conectados. Este ejemplo usa xdm en debian, pero lo he hecho con kdm y gdm.
